Parker groaned and shifted, trying to grow comfortable on sheets cool with dampness. He must have sweated buckets. He opened his eyes to see four crude drawings tacked on the wall. In each a stick man held hands with a stick woman and four little stick people surrounded them. His family.

He turned his head and smiled at the sight of a sleeping Josie curled up in his rocking chair. He’d literally gone into a dark and dangerous place and back to make sure she was safe. Her and his little girl. Thank You, God, for giving me another chance to tell Josie how much I love her.

He must have made a louder noise, because her beautiful dark eyes popped open. “Parker.” She rushed to his side, dropping the blanket to the floor. She knelt next to his bed and lifted his hand to her cheek. “You had me so frightened.”

“I couldn’t breathe for fear I wouldn’t rescue you in time. And I thought I’d never have the chance to tell you I love you.” His gaze locked with her teary one. “When I get out of this bed, I want to marry you, Josephine Montgomery.”

Four shouts rang out from the doorway. Josie smiled, nodding. “I will most definitely marry you. Right here if you want.”

“No, I want to be standing. I want to watch you walk toward me. Do you love me, Josie?” His heart skipped a beat waiting for her answer.

“Oh. I did leave that part out, didn’t I?” She laughed. “I do love you, you silly man. Are you going to kiss me?”

“As soon as the children give us some privacy.” He smiled and motioned for them to leave. When they did—reluctantly, if the looks on their faces were any indication—he tugged her down so he could reach her lips. He pressed his lips against hers and closed his eyes. When they pulled apart, he whispered, “You’re a dream come true.”

“Oh Parker. Let me tell you about dreams.” She laid her head on his chest. “When I accepted your job offer, my dream was to have a place of my own. One that couldn’t be taken away in the ravages of war or because of death. I wanted to be self-sufficient.”

“And now?”

She raised her head to look at him. “I still want those things, but I want them with you. God sure has a way of changing our dreams for the better. I’ll be forever grateful.”

“Kiss me again.” Parker cupped her face and drew her close.
